The song's "true love" does not refer to an earthly suitor but rather refers to God Himself, and the "me" receiving the abundance of gifts is representative of every baptized person. From "a partridge in a pear tree" to the "twelve drummers drumming", each days gifts are reflective of specific spiritual blessings.
